After a long and resilient battle with primary peritoneal cancer, Roberta Aberle, 53, of Aurora, CO passed away on November 1, 2017 with her husband David Oine at her side.

Even as she battled her own cancer, Roberta was a tireless advocate for patient care, hoping to improve the lives of others also fighting life-threatening illnesses.

With her infectious and mischievous smile, her spirit of love, laughter, and adventure, and her passion for the creative approach, Roberta was a true original. People were naturally drawn to her magnetic personality, and she had a gift for making others feel like the most important person in the world.

Roberta pursued her dreams with vigor. After graduating for Colorado State University, she ran her own marketing company serving clients including Conde Nast, Levi Strauss, Discovery Channel, and Home Shopping Network, among others. Later, she transitioned into healthcare, applying her passion and expertise to process improvement for patient care delivery at both Kaiser and UC Health.

In 2011 she published her first novel. One of the saddest things about her passing is we will never read the follow-up novels she was working on at her death.

David and Roberta were married on December 31, 2003 in Antigua. In addition to her beloved husband, Roberta is survived by her loving father, Tony Aberle, her mother, Rosemarie Aberle, and her sister, Carol Carroll, all of Fort Collins, CO. She was preceded in death by sisters Debbie Drohman and Brenda Aberle. She is also survived by  numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as her beloved Chihuahuas, Smudge and Smooch.

Per her final request, two Celebration of Life services will be scheduled. The first will occur in early December in Fort Collins.

Date: December 9, 2017 (Saturday)

Time: Event from 4pm – 7pm

Where: Lincoln Center Performing Arts Center in Fort Collins, CO

  1. Cancer Sucks! But, it can’t suck your spirit- until you let it. Roberta’s inspired fight-has inspired my fight. Fights best fought with heavy helpings of friends, humor, tears, honesty, and love. A Beautiful Lady- Inside and Out. She will be remembered as one of the “Good Guys”. To her Family and Close Friends, we send our Deepest Condolences for your loss. Kelly & Sammy Hannah

  2. Tony, Rose and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Berta “Birdie” was and is an inspiration to so many! When I think of Berta I think of: inspiring, loving, honest, hard working, teacher, writer,
fighter, advocate, authentic…I will always remember her big smile and her big hugs! It was so wonderful to see her at Palooza a few years ago and her and I just hugged and cried for the longest time. I am grateful she is pain free and with her sisters and is at peace. You all are in my thoughts, heart and prayers.
    Love.

  3. I met Roberta Jean Aberle on Facebook. We have mutual friends and she reached out to me, offering hope for me on my journey. The one time I met up with her, she was such a bright light. Roberta had a Devine spark and definitely made a impact in my life. I give my condolences to her family and friends. Prayers, love and light.

  4. Roberta, thank you for bringing me into your life. I am truly a better, more compassionate person because of you. I will cherish our time together forever. May those teal wings allow you to soar.

  5. Karen Doebelin :

I have so much admiration for Roberta, her strength, will, talent, her beauty. There are so many other wonderful attributes Roberta has, some I admired most was her drive to touch people and make them feel comfortable, loved and accepted. Roberta will always be remembered as a true shining star who is now above looking over her loved ones and embracing them.

  6. There are not enough words in the Universe to describe our Birdie. She was the kind of person you meet once in a lifetime. We all know about her passion for life and love of people. That does not need to be said. I want to share a story of her true selflessness. This past summer we were sitting next to each other at the memorial service of the father of our dear childhood friend Aly. At one point Roberta turned to me and asked “How are you doing? Is this bringing back memories of your dad?” My dad passed away November 2, 2014. This beautiful soul is asking me how I’m doing, when she is facing her own imminent death. That’s the kind of person you meet Once In A Lifetime. Her light and love will shine down on us all until eternity. Honor each day in memory of Roberta Jean Aberle!

  7. Lura Pittman Gerhart :

    Joe and Genevieve Aberle

  13. Roberta was an amazing spirit. She faced everything with a smile and determination. She was most certainly the wind beneath my wings as I face my medical challenges. This world will be a lot less bright, but heaven will be shining. Thank you Roberta for just being amazing. You will be dearly missed.

  14. Carol Milambo :

    David and family,

I only met Roberta on mylifeline website but her story touched me so much. Her fighting spirit inspired me and even though I am currently dealing with a chronic illness which is not cancer, I am able to draw on her strength and positivity as I move forward. Surely, in addition to the others gone before her, you have another angel looking down on and looking after you.

Thank you for sharing your story.

    Carol – Zambia

  15. Roberta was a rare person – fun loving, considerate, optimistic, fun loving(I know I wrote it twice), inspiring, kind, magnetic… I feel fortunate to have known her for the last 14-15 years. She is physically gone, but her spirit will go on in each who knew her.

  16. I met Roberta at work, and I loved working with her: her attention to detail, willingness to ask questions, and positive attitude made her a wonderful colleague. Unfortunately, she accepted a new position after a few months, but promised me that she’d keep in touch. And she did! After I made the decision to go back to Canada, Roberta and I stayed in touch on Facebook, and she invited me to her blog. It’s been a hard few years to see my vibrant, beautiful friend struggle to overcome a devastating diagnosis. We had talked about Roberta and David coming to visit, because she loved the ocean. Sadly, we never got that chance. Yesterday, I walked by the ocean and thought of Roberta flying free of pain and worry and visiting the ocean with me. My deepest sympathy to Roberta’s husband David, her parents, and the rest of her family. Roberta was a remarkable person, who was admired and loved by everyone who was lucky enough to have her touch their lives.

  17. Liz & Mike Whyte :

Faith is looking beyond what is and trusting what will be. It is the presence of light in darkness, the presence of God in all.
Roberta was a Powerful Angel and a shining light to all who knew her spirit. She will be truly missed.
Mike and I are so sorry for your loss and send our Love and prayers to David and all of Roberta’s Family

  18. Danielle Wilson :

Roberta (Birdie)……….I’ll never forget my trip to Colorado to do the finishing touches on your home before you sold it. To spend time with you, even go out to a Country Bar you oh so wanted to show me. It might have had you bed ridden for three days-plus after but you were all in. I’m oh so very saddened at the loss of your physical body, your smile is infectious, but you’re spirit is strong and will forever live on. Love you Roberta and huge hugs and condolences to David and the rest of your family.

  19. Stevan Hidalgo :

I was honored to have known Roberta and have some wonderful conversations. She truly was an inspiration. David, my heart goes out to you as you grieve Roberta’s passing.

  20. Lisa Thorn DeSha :

Berta, I hate that you are gone. But I’m also glad at the same time you aren’t suffering anymore. I will miss you, your amazing attitude, your smile, your friendship, well, everything. You are with my dad now. Daddy, this is Roberta, Berta, this is Wayne. I love you both. I will keep your family and friends in my prayers. I promise.

  21. I could write a book about you, but I know our ending may come out different!!! Ilovumyfriend!!!!!

  22. I knew Roberta many years ago when we were both kids going to O’Dea Elementary School in Fort Collins; she really was, in fact, my first love. Recently I stumbled across her book on Amazon and then followed her progress on MyLifeLine.org. She must have been a most amazing person to be loved by so many people! I wish that I could have had the privilege of knowing her as an adult, but I still recognize her sunny smile after all these years.
I am saddened by her passing. May all who loved her find peace.

  23. Matt Charboneau :

I have always been so very impressed at Roberta’s determination, her will power and her strength in fighting that horrible disease. God bless you Roberta… what an inspiration you were to all of us who complain about such minor things in our life. She’s taught me to appreciate every day God gives me for what it’s worth. Thank you Roberta for being a class act all the way through to the end. I know I could not possibly handle something like that in the same way…. You’ve got your wings! No more pain.
