Born in Stockholm, Sweden on May 24th, 1943

Departed on September 26th, 2020 and resided in Denver, Colorado

On Saturday afternoon, September 26, 2020, J. Peter Hellman, died in his home in Denver at the age of 77 after living with brain cancer since late 2019.

Peter was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1943 to Petrus and Nathalie and immigrated to the United States when he was seven. He graduated from Stanford University where he earned a degree in economics and received a master’s degree from the University of Denver Daniels College of Business.

A lover of golf, hiking, skiing and seeing the world, Peter was an active and animated person who shared his passion for (and occasional misadventures in) the outdoors with his family and friends. He had a sharp and nuanced sense of humor and brought ease to those around him.

Peter was a successful business leader, entering the travel business in 1978 and navigating his company through an industry that was rapidly transforming at the behest of the internet. During his time in the industry, he was on the board of directors for the Better Business Bureau of Colorado, was President of Skal International Colorado for 2 years and was a proud member for decades.

It was through the travel industry that he met his loving wife Claudia. Together they ran Spirit of Travel and Classic Golf Tours for 16 years. After they sold Spirit of Travel in 2016, Peter continued arranging golf tours at Classic Golf Tours until June 2020.

He will be loved, missed and remembered by his wife of 26 years Claudia; children: Erik, Reid (from marriage to Madie) and Paige; granddaughter Tecla; siblings: Merit, Eleonor, Hans and Ann; and many other family members and friends.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Petrus and Nathalie and his sister Katherine.

He will be interred at Fort Logan. Due to COVID-19, a celebration of his life will be held in 2021. Details to follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Colorado Public Radio, 7409 S Alton Ct Centennial, CO 80112 or Guide Dogs for the Blind P.O. Box 151200, San Rafael, CA 94915

My condolences to Claudia and the children for their great loss.  Peter was bigger than life.  I have played basketball against Peter, have played golf and skied with Peter and always enjoyed his company.  Gretchen and fondly remember  cruising with peter and Claudia and I remember Peter taking me for a tour around Tortola on motor scooters,.   We ended our ride at a bar down a dirt  road, where apparently Peter knew the owner!

Quite a guy!  I will miss him very much!

Thank you for sending this review of Peter’s life to Gene and me. We only knew Peter for a year but you and Peter became good friends and golf buddies. Gene so enjoyed talking to Peter about their shared Swedish heritage.  We’ll miss Peter very much. Claudia, your constant devotion to Peter and his care for the last months was a testimony of your love for Peter. You were so sacrificial and tireless. We desire to support you during this time of grief.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Claudia and the family of Peter Hellman. With his passing, we lose a good friend and fellow traveler. Peter came into our life through our mutual association with the Wellshire Men’s Golf Club. His affable and gracious demeanor, breezy patter, and similar life experiences made our many rounds of golf together a true joy, leading to a wonderful five-year friendship. A friendship that ended too soon. Peter will be remembered and missed. Our lives are enriched by having known him.

Dear Claudia, Paige, Eric and Reid,
To all of you, please know that we are thinking of you as you grieve the loss of your dear husband and father.  We always enjoyed spending time with Peter whether on the sidelines of the soccer field, on a ski slope at A-Basin, over a glass of Cabernet, a Denver Restaurant Week dinner or a drive thru the Dordogne. Peter had an easy grace, wit and charm.
Our love to you, Tamara and Francis

Dear Erik, Reid, Madie and families, Claudia, Paige and families
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.
I loved being part of Peter and his family in the 80’s looking after Erik and Reid for a year and a half. I was their first Swedish au-pair. I have fond memories of skiing in Dillon, hiking, travelling and meeting Peter’s extended family. He was a genuine, happy, kind and warm person. Love from Katarina Hellström-De Vincentis

Claudia and Paige, my deepest condolences to you and all your family.  From “Delaware” to Slavens Storm & Sun Devils soccer to the aisles at King Soopers, even a brief, random encounter with any of the Hellmans was invariably a booster shot of cheeriness.  May the wealth of memories from happier days ease the pain of your loss & bring you lasting comfort.

Dear Claudia and Family,

it was with great sadness that I found the notice of Peter’s passing.   I will hold the warm memories of those days in travel.—those times of ups and downs and always see Peter who tried to keep us all on an even keel whether at home or out of the country.   So sorry for you loss.   Fondly, Judy
