Why Choose Cremation Society of Colorado

Four Facts about Crematories in Colorado

  1. Cremation abuses have been reported around the country. Such abuse means your loved one may not be cared for in the manner you expect. It is important that you find a Cremation Service Provider that has a reputation built on integrity and that cares for your loved one with dignity and respect. In addition, this must all be done at a reasonable fee.
  2. Perhaps the most important thing that a consumer can know is that Colorado is the only state in the country that does not require a license to operate a crematory. That means your loved one could be cremated in a warehouse or storage facility and you wouldn't be able to witness any portion of the process to insure the cremation is properly handled.
  3. Currently cremation accounts for 26% of all final dispositions in the United States. But here in the Denver area, cremation accounts for more than 50% of all final dispositions. As you would expect, there are a lot of providers to inspect before choosing one. At last count there were over 30 Cremation Service Providers listed with the State Vitals Department.
  4. It falls on your shoulders to find the right Cremation Service Provider. With more than 30 Cremation Service Providers to choose from in the Denver area, you need to know what is important when selecting one for yourself or your loved one. The first step is knowing the standards by which to judge.

Seven Standards to Use when Choosing a Cremation Service Provider

  1. Up-front Pricing: You would think having a General Price List would be a requirement to conduct business in the funeral industry... and it is! The Federal Trade Commission requires that consumers be given a General Price List as soon as there is any discussion about services. Ask for a General Price List!
  2. Crematory Location: The location of the crematory should be in a facility that accepts visitors and allows for public inspection. Because of the lack of regulations and accountability in Colorado the consumer must proceed with caution.
  3. Affiliations: In the funeral industry it is common for one company to own and operate several mortuary/crematory centers under different names. But what is important is the reputation of each center. Ask if the company is a member of the Cremation Association of North America, the Better Business Bureau, and employs members of the Colorado Funeral Service Board - all voluntary associations that show good faith and practice.
  4. Policies and Procedures: Since cremation is an irreversible process, a reputable Cremation Service Provider will have written policies and procedures to ensure that you or your loved one will be cared for properly and treated with dignity. As a consumer, you have a right to request and receive a copy of the provider's policy and procedure manual. In addition, a family member should be offered the opportunity to make a positive identification of the deceased before the cremation process begins. Log books should be available that document past procedures and the provider's adherence to policy.
  5. Inspection: You have the right to inspect everything listed in the first four items. If inspection is denied or even offered hesitantly, stay away!
  6. Witnessed Cremation: Witnessing the beginning of the cremation process offers closure for some people. Any family member desiring to witness this process should feel welcome to do so at the encouragement of the Cremation Service Provider.
  7. Guarantee: Your peace of mind should be guaranteed based on the items outlined above. If a Cremation Service Provider cannot live up to these 7 Standards, avoid the potential for abuse and keep looking for a Cremation Service Provider that can. Furthermore, if you are dissatisfied with any aspect of service, that charge should be reduced or eliminated.
